"The heart cannot exist without love; it will love either God or creatures. If it does not love creatures, it certainly will not love God. In order to become holy, we must therefore banish from our heart all that is not for God. When anyone came to the Fathers of the desert and desired to be received by them he was asked: 'Do you bring an empty heart that it may be filled by the Holy Ghost?' And they were right, for a heart that is filled with the things of earth has no room for the love of God. He who brings a vessel filled with earth to the spring will never be able to fill it with water until he empties it of the earth with which it is filled. How does it happen that so many pray and go frequently to Holy Communion and still make no considerable progress in the love of God? The reason is doubtless because the heart is full of self-esteem, of vanity, of self-will, and of attachment to creatures. He, therefore, who wishes to arrive at the perfect love of God must practice poverty in spirit. He must be detached from worldly possessions, from temporal honors, from his fellow creatures, and from himself."

The Poor and Neglected:  A Responsive Reading
Respond: Kyrie eleison(keer-ee-ey e-ley-uh-son)
the brief petition “Lord, have mercy,” used in various offices of the Greek Orthodox Church, Anglican and of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Almighty and most merciful God, we call to mind before you all those whom it would be so easy to forget: the homeless, the destitute, the sick, the aged, and all who have none to care for them. God have mercy on us:
Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. God have mercy on us:  (Respond)

Look with pity O Creator God, upon the people of this land who live with injustice, terror, disease and death as their constant companions.  God have mercy on us. (Respond)

Help us to eliminate cruelty to these our neighbors, animals and this land, your creation. Have mercy on us God.  (Respond)

Strengthen those who spend their lives establishing equal protection of the law and equal opportunities for all.  God have mercy on us. (Respond)

Almighty God, by the power of your Holy Spirit, inspire all pastors to preach the unadulterated Word diligently, teaching each one to in turn shed the word of God abroad.  God have mercy. (Respond)

Lord grant that every one of us may enjoy a fair portion of the abundance of this land through your Son, Jesus the Christ, our Lord. AMEN.

TE DEUM

Te Deum - 5th Century Monastic Chant (Solemn)

LYRICS

We praise Thee, O God: we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship Thee and the Father everlasting.
To Thee all Angels:
to Thee the heavens and all the Powers therein.
To Thee the Cherubim and Seraphim cry with unceasing voice:
Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Hosts.
The heavens and the earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory.
Thee the glorious choir of the Apostles.
Thee the admirable company of the Prophets.
Thee the white-robed army of Martyrs praise.
Thee the Holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge.
The Father of infinite Majesty.
Thine adorable, true and only Son
Also the Holy Ghost the Paraclete.
Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.
Thou having taken upon Thee to deliver man
didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.
Thou having overcome the sting of death
didst open to believers the kingdom of heaven.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God
in the glory of the Father.
We believe that Thou shalt come to be our Judge.
We beseech Thee, therefore, help Thy servants:
whom Thou has redeemed with Thy precious Blood.
Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints in glory everlasting.
Lord, save Thy people:
and bless Thine inheritance.
Govern them and lift them up forever.
Day by day we bless Thee.
And we praise Thy name forever:
and world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, this day to keep us without sin.
Have mercy on us, O Lord: have mercy on us.
Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us:
as we have hoped in Thee.
O Lord, in Thee have I hoped:
let me never be confounded.

FYI: Te Deum Latin Lyrics.

Te Deum laudamus: te Dominum confitemur.
Te aeternum Patrem omnis terra veneratur.
Tibi omnes Angeli, tibi Caeli et universae Potestates:
Tibi Cherubim et Seraphim incessabili voce proclamant:
Sanctus: Sanctus: Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Patrem immensae maiestatis:
Venerandum tuum verum et unicum Filium:
Sanctum quoque Paraclitum Spiritum.
Tu Rex gloriae, Christe.
Tu Patris sempiternus es Filius.
Tu ad liberandum suscepturus hominem,
non horruisti Virginis uterum.
Tu devicto mortis aculeo,
aperuisti credentibus regna caelorum.
Tu ad dexteram Dei sedes, in gloria Patris.
Iudex crederis esse venturus. (Kneel)
Te ergo quaesumus, tuis famulis subveni,
quos pretioso sanguine redemisti.
Aeterna fac cum Sanctis tuis in gloria numerari.
Salvum fac populum tuum Domine,
et benedic haereditati tuae.
Et rege eos, et extolle illos usque in aeternum.
Per singulos dies, benedicamus te.
Et laudamus nomen tuum in saeculum,
et in saeculum saeculi.
Dignare Domine die isto,
sine peccato nos custodire.
Miserere nostri Domine, miserere nostri.
Fiat misericordia tua Domine super nos,
quemadmodum speravimus in te.
In te Domine speravi:
non confundar in aeternum.

This is the Catholic Church's most famous hymn of thanksgiving. It is similar in meaning to the Gloria in Excelsis Deo, only it is much more elaborate and solemn. That is, it is more explicit, going into more detail.

It is very powerful and moving, especially when the organist knows which chords and instruments to utilize.

It is attributed to Nicetas, bishop of Remesiana in Dacia (modern-day Romania), who lived in the late 4th century.

Think about what the Church has managed to do. We are talking about an institution which has survived all the vicissitudes of history, all the crises, persecutions, wars, barbarian invasions, monarchs, dictators, countless "all too human" bishops and popes, etc. And nevertheless, she still survives to the present day -- and in the same form! This is a miracle of God's protection.

Thank God for technology! To think that citizens of the Roman Empire heard some of the same chants that we can download!

Tchaikovsky - Hymn of the Cherubim - USSR Ministry Of Culture Chamber Choir

But in the midst of these things we are brought back by the earnest desire of charity to what we have already said above; that every preacher should give forth a sound more by his deeds than by his words, and rather by good living imprint footsteps for men to follow than by speaking shew them the way to walk in. For that cockatrice, too, whom the Lord in his manner of speech takes to represent a good preacher, when he is now preparing to crow, first shakes his wings, and by smiting himself makes himself more awake; since it is surely necessary that those who give utterance to words of holy preaching should first be well awake in earnestness of good living, lest they rouse others with their voice while themselves torpid in performance; that they should first shake themselves up by lofty deeds, and then make others solicitous for good living; that they should first smite themselves with the wings of their thoughts; that whatsoever in themselves is unprofitably torpid they should discover by anxious investigation, and correct by strict animadversion, and then at length set in order the life of others by speaking; that they should take heed to punish their own faults by bewailings, and then denounce what calls for punishment in others; and that, before they give voice to words of exhortation, they should proclaim in their deeds all that they are about to speak.

Closing Prayer (Night Prayer)
Prayers from the Ancient Celtic Church is a collection of prayers from the time of Patrick (d. ca. 460-493) to the Synod of Whitby (664), Accompanied by Praise the Lord - Sergei Rachmaninov

In Unison with Reverance:
Jesus, Son of God most high,
May your holy angels keep
Watch around us as we lie
In our shining beds asleep.
Time’s hid veil with truth to pierce
Let them teach our dreaming eyes,
High King of the Universe,
High Priest of the Mysteries.
May no demon of the air,
May no malice of our foes,
Evil dream or haunting care
Mar our willing, prompt repose!
May our vigils hallowed be
By the tasks we undertake!
May our sleep be fresh and free,
Without stop and without break.
[In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit, AMEN]
St. Patrick’s Evensong, translated as poetry, from A Celtic Psaltery, New York, 1917.
